Based on information from Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have lost their lives while detained starting from October 2023. An advocacy organization located in Israel has reported that the true figure is almost certainly significantly larger, as a result of many of disappeared individuals originating in Gaza.

Report Findings

A recent report recorded fatalities attributed to brutality, medical neglect, and starvation. Researchers employed freedom of information requests, medical examiner documents, and interviews with attorneys, activists, next of kin, and witnesses.

Official sources disclosed complete statistics limited to the opening period of the hostilities. Over this period, reported numbers show an record casualty rate among detained Palestinians, averaging one death every four days.

Latest Data

Official armed forces last updated information on deaths in detention for May 2024, and correctional authorities by September 2024. Researchers identified another 35 deaths in custody after these periods and verified them with Israeli authorities.

Despite the aggregate figure of deaths documented being substantially larger than other recent estimates, it probably fails to capture the entire scope of Palestinian loss, as stated by the head of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Although we are providing evidence for a greater figure of casualties than previously reported, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are certain that there are even now individuals who lost their lives in custody that we have not identified.”

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Restricted Israeli data indicates that the majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who lost their lives in detention were ordinary citizens, per a related inquiry.

In May of the current year, a military intelligence database following all fighters in Gaza, a registry of over 47,000 listed people, listed merely 21 fatalities in custody. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in detention.

Prison Situation

Physical violence, mistreatment, and other abuse of detainees from Palestine is now standard practice across Israel’s detention facilities throughout two years of hostilities. Top government figures have openly admitted inadequate food and an underground jail detaining detainees who are denied sunlight.

Present and past prisoners and insiders from the armed services have all alleged systemic violations of global standards.

Systemic Abuse

The systematic abuse came with a troubling surge in deaths documented across a minimum of 12 prison sites in Israel. Over ten years prior to the war, there were typically a couple deaths a year.

“This is not only a single occurrence here and there. It is systemic and it will continue,” a spokesperson stated, partly since there is a climate of virtual exemption from consequences for killing and mistreating Palestinian individuals.

Only a single instance of beating detainees has come to trial, with the soldier sentenced to 210 days. An effort to charge others over a severe beating involving assault resulted in public rallies and the detention of Israel’s senior defense attorney, with the suspects now requesting that allegations against them be withdrawn.

No Legal Action

“Regardless of this large quantity of casualties, during 24 months no one has been detained,” the spokesperson noted. “There exist no prosecutions over any death.

“While these practices are being applied, all Palestinian detainees in confinement faces risk, even the healthy ones, including the young ones who have no medical issues.”

Notable Incidents

Several casualties in custody have been publicly known, including a 50-year-old hospital director who perished in confinement after four months in custody.

An inmate incarcerated with the deceased reported that he was taken to the exercise area by guards just prior to his demise, visibly injured and naked from the lower body. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. The prison service and defense forces supplied researchers with the figure of casualties in custody, and basic other details including the site where they perished, but not the detainees’ identities.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, primarily individuals from Gaza, analysts were unable to connect the minimal data supplied by officials to a casualty recorded by advocacy bodies, via testimony from freed prisoners or reporting in the news outlets.

The detainees’ families might not have learned about their family members’ fatalities as well, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinians it is holding. For seven months at the beginning of the hostilities, the Israeli military refused to provide essential data about the whereabouts of many of individuals confined in Gaza, effectively carrying out a policy of unacknowledged detention, per the rights monitoring body.

Insufficient Disclosure
