Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
