Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
